Industry has moved from mechanical control to electronic control, and it’s now in the middle of a digital transformation. Industrial connectors are having to keep pace with all three shifts at once.
Broadly, connectors fall into two camps. Military-specification connectors, round and rectangular, built for mechanical durability and sealed interfaces. And commercial-grade alternatives, adapted for industrial use with tougher seals and materials than their off-the-shelf counterparts.
Modern sealed connectors now cover I/O, power, and signal applications, in round, rectangular, and coaxial RF configurations. Copper is still the standard conductor, but optical fibre is gaining ground in sectors like factory automation.
The market reflects that shift. Global connector demand was projected to approach $11 billion by 2023, driven by the Industrial Internet of Things, factory automation, robotics, and smart grid rollouts. The energy sector alone was expected to grow at roughly 5% a year as alternative energy sources expand.
